The Human Body

Explore the human body with The Human Body app.  Suitable for young children upwards, this interactive app shows how the human body works.  Users start by creating a profile then choosing which aspect of the human body to focus on.  Vision, hearing and brain function are detailed using the iPad camera and microphone.

The app has some clever features such as how the brain responds to smell, how the body reacts when bitten by a mosquito or tickled by a feather.

The digestive system, where you can select food to eat and watch to see how it progresses through the body, is a popular feature.

A dashboard feature for teachers and parents provides access to a handbook of supporting materials, prompts for discussion and activities.

Visioning for future learning: Integrating iPads using the eLPF

Visioning for Future Learning:

Integrating iPads using the e-Learning Planning Framework

Tara Fagan & Tania Coutts, CORE Education, April 2013

Are you thinking about purchasing iPads for your school or early childhood centre?  If so, you won’t be alone - many educators from around New Zealand are integrating iPads into their classrooms and early childhood centres.  In our research and work, we are noting some common trends around the implementation of these devices.

Successful integration involves planning and discussion. One tool that some schools have found useful to support their discussions and e-Learning vision is the e-Learning Planning framework (eLPF).  The five dimensions of the framework - Leadership, Teaching and Learning, Professional Learning, Beyond the Classroom and Infrastructure and Technology - provide good discussion guides in planning for how your school or centre will deploy these devices.  Each dimension of the eLPF needs to be considered for the iPads to be used effectively.  For example, it can be difficult to manage a class set of iPads if the infrastructure is not robust or it is not based on a good understanding of the pedagogy - it is not about using the iPads to replace a pen, it is about using the iPad in a creative way.

Under each dimension of the e-Learning Planning Framework, we have compiled reflective questions to help you with the process of integrating iPads into your setting.

Leadership
What is your vision? - How will iPads enhance your school/early childhood curriculum?

Have you thought about:
  • the potential of these technologies (or is this a given)
  • how these devices are being used in education
  • whether these will be BYOD, 1-1 or school owned/leased sets of iPads?
  • the needs of your community?
  • The professional development needs of your teaching team?
  • How you will review if the iPads are making a difference to student learning?

Teaching and Learning
How will iPads transform teaching and learning in your school/early childhood centre?

How will you:
  • introduce the iPads to your teachers and learners?
  • ensure teachers and students have an understanding of what it means to be cybersmart?
  • support collaborative learning with the iPads?
  • encourage creativity with iPads?
  • ensure that learning is blended so it is about the learning rather than the iPad?
  • use iPads to make connections with other learners?
  • use iPads to make connections across the curriculum?
  • ensure iPads are part of the ‘everydayness’ of the classroom?
  • enable students to make a choice about what tool they will select for their learning?
  • ensure the apps that students are using are appropriate

Professional Learning
How will professional learning support the successful integration of iPads in your school/early childhood centre?
In what ways will:
  • the teaching team develop an understanding of iPad pedagogy?
  • teachers’ innovative practices be modelled and shared?
  • teachers explore the iPad before integrating it into the classroom?
  • there be opportunity to build teacher and student expertise?
  • the Virtual Learning Network (VLN) community become a tool for learning?

Beyond the Classroom
How will the use of the iPads extend beyond the classroom?

How will:
  • your families/whānau and the community be involved?
  • the iPads support sharing learning with parents?
  • iPads be used to communicate beyond the classroom?
  • iPads be used to collaborate beyond the classroom?

Technology and Infrastructure
How have you considered the infrastructure supporting the implementation of iPads?

  • Can our current infrastructure support iPads?
  • What are the insurance requirements?
  • Where will the iPads be stored?
  • Who will have responsible for ensuring that the iOS and apps are up-to-date or will it be a team responsibility?
  • How will the iPads be charged at the end of each day?
  • Will it be part of the environment or will it be stored away?

Good practice we have seen in settings implementing iPads include:

  • Teachers being given the opportunity for hands-on exploring time with iPads prior to the devices being used in the classroom
  • Teachers taking ownership of their class iPad/s and having a budget for apps they can choose to support their students learning needs
  • Students being given the same opportunities for exploration and play
  • Students and teachers being given the opportunity to take control of their learning and find the apps/tools that support their learning
  • Leaders building expertise amongst students and teachers, this is vital for sustainability
  • Teachers creating their own Professional Learning Network eg VLN to seek guidance and support from others as well as share their successes
  • Strong infrastructure that supports the integration of multiple devices
  • Sharing the experiences and learning with the community
  • Integrating thinking and learning around digital citizenship into the school curriculum

A strong vision, supported by a robust action plan is essential in leading the way to successful integration.  As we have highlighted, the eLPF will help guide these decisions and support leaders and teachers as they implement a blended learning programme.  The importance of engaging, motivating and inspiring students continues to be at the forefront of teaching.  The words of Kevin Honeycutt sum this up beautifully:-)

“The killer app for the 21st century is to inspire kids to learn to love to learn.”

Kevin Honeycutt

Dandelion

This interactive book tells the story of Benjamin who counts the nine hundred and seventy two steps it takes him to reach school each day. Dandelion tells of Benjamin's problems with bullies, his fears and his hopes.  Benjamin's imagination and creativity become increasingly important as the story progresses.

This app is beautifully illustrated using contrasting colours that tell as much about the story as the words do.  The subtle background music adds to the experience.  Readers have the choice to have each page read to them or to read themselves.  The interactivity (through breath and touch) is waiting to be discovered on each page.

A lovely tale that draws as much on the readers imagination as it does with Benjamin's.

Details:
Price:  NZD1.29 at time of writing
Age: would appeal to children 10 years and younger
Use: Prompt as talking about feelings.  Also useful for older children to showcase how elements can be used to add to a story.
Let us know how you have used this app.

WWF together

WWF Together is a free app from the World Wildlife Fund.  The app shares  information on endangered animals through a variety of interactive features including video and origami.  The images are beautiful and a range of features are used to reveal facts about each animal such as chopping down bamboo to learn about their diet or having a globe appear highlighting the distance from where the animal lives in comparison to the user.  A great way to learn about endangered species.

Puppup lost at the zoo

This story tells the adventures of Puppup, a loved soft toy that gets lost during a visit to the zoo.  A lovely tale that is read aloud and accompanied with beautiful illustrations and some animation.

The app is approximately $4.20 but occasionally appears as a free app of the day so worth keeping an eye out for it.

Sharing files across devices

I am loving Instashare for transferring files, videos and photos between iOS devices such as an iPad and iPhone.   It works like Airdrop on the Mac by enabling the transfer of files via local wi-fi or Bluetooth. There is a Mac beta version which works well to  instantly share files between my Mac, iPad and iPhone. Currently an app for iOS Devices, the developers are working on an android as well as Windows version.

Instashare would be great for sharing files between devices the classroom.

Instashare is free, and you can upgrade to a ad-free version for around $1.30.

iPads in Education

This video highlights how iPads are being used in education at a secondary school level. Tricia Kelleher, Principal, reflects on the use of the iPads: “iPads mean that it is no longer simply a case of a sage on a stage, it is more about collaborative learning, enhanced engagement and infinitely greater learning potential. Teachers and students work together to create something special and we are very proud to be leading the way."

Learning@Schools - Augmented Reality Presentation

This week I am lucky enough to be presenting at the first ever Learning@Schools Roadshow.  Kicking off in Whangarei on Wednesday 3rd April with an amazing programme.

One of my presentations is 'QR Codes and Augmented Reality'

The iPad comes alive with Augmented Reality

This workshop will focus on the use of an iPad to explore QR Codes and Augmented Reality (AR).
The session will focus on how to effectively use and integrate QR codes throughout the curriculum and school community. You will see how Augmented Reality has engaged, enhanced and empowered students to write and create books using a variety of different iPad apps.

I have enjoyed introducing students and teachers to the concept of augmented reality and have been exploring how this can be used to support teaching and learning.  We have had heaps of fun trying out different apps and thinking about how these can be used.  To date, the biggest success has been in engaging students in writing digital stories using augmented reality pictures.  All you need is your IMAGINATION!  Here is the list of apps I am sharing within this workshop.  Some of these apps do require markers to be printed off.

Imag-N-O-Tron - The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr Morris Lessmore

Tour Wrist - not truly augmented reality BUT gives amazing possibilities when you are able to visit historic landmarks and use these pictures as the basis for extending storytelling.

Can you imagine when this is a reality and part of our everyday life?

Marble Math Junior

This math game provides a series of challenges. Players roll the marble (by tilting the iPad) or drag the marble (using touch) across the screen to complete the challenge.

Player profiles can be created and customised including level and problems to be solved. There is no limit to the number of profiles that can be created. Each player can create an avatar and an overview of the player's results can be viewed. Instructions can be read out to the player - particularly useful for emerging readers.

Challenges vary from sequencing, shape finding, time, equivalence, addition, subtraction and multiplication with the level of challenge increasing as the player progresses.  There is also a money challenge (levels 2 &3), however as this not in New Zealand currency, I generally uncheck it in the options so it unavailable as a challenge.

If the player gets the answer incorrect, they are offered the opportunity to have another go, skip the question or be shown the answer.

A good app for reinforcing math learning in the classroom.

Interactive Books - Reading and Creating Stories

Thanks to the teaching team at Whangarei Heads School for sharing these interactive storybooks with me. Collins Big Cat have 8 FREE story apps that not only promote a love of reading, but are also incredibly interactive. My favourite part of these apps is being able to encourage the children to create their own stories with the inbuilt 'story creator'. You can create your own scenes, add your own text and then record your stories. Check out the You Tube clip below created by Collins Books and have fun exploring.

App Harvesting

A group of Whangarei teachers recently had an 'app harvest' session.  Here are a few of our favourite apps shared on the daySmile  - I thoroughly recommend getting together with teachers in your area to share apps you and your students are using to support teaching and learning.  Not only do you discover new apps you also get to see 'how' other teachers/students are utilsing these apps.  AND the most important part of these app harvests is meeting teachers from other schoolsSmile  A fantastic professional learning opportunity.  As the list below is a picture - you will need to head on over to the Virtual Learning Network where you can download the PDF version to follow the links easily.

iBooks 3

The iBooks store has finally 'arrived' in New Zealand.  While the app has always been available,  the purchasing of books was not an option.  This has now changed and while not all publishers have their content with iBooks, there is a good starting range.  There is also a range of self-published books, created with iBooks Authors.  These self-published books include textbooks, recipe books, children's stories etc.

The release of iBooks 3 has seen alignment with iCloud so that your notes, bookmarks and placemark is synced across all your  ios devices.

It is worth browsing the iBooks Store if you haven't already.  You might like to check out the free sample of Life on Earth, a multi-touch interactive book that showcases the future of textbooks.

MoMA Art Lab iPad App

The children and teaching team at Manaia Kindergarten continue to be an inspiration to me in my role as an Early Years Facilitator. A great ECE blog to check out to see the incredible learning happening. Manaia Kindergarten have had an iPad for sometime now and it is great to see the children working collaboratively using the MoMA Art Lab App to create their artwork. I have just downloaded this app and looking forward to working with it with children.  Check out the You Tube clip below for a quick 'what it's all about':-)

Dinosaurs in NZ Classrooms!

Sharon - our Hamilton Early Years Facilitator under attack in Auckland!

I have had heaps of fun exploring the AR Dinopark App with students at different schools throughout Whangarei.  The excitement and buzz is amazing as the dinosaurs crash on into the classroom.  The strategy of taking photos and then using these photos as creative and imaginative writing prompts has proved very successful.  We have used the Pic Collage App to put our stories together.

Check out some of our posts on the Whangarei Primary School blog.  We would LOVE your comments.
